On July 1, 2010 the U.S. Department of Energy mandated the stoppage of production for magnetic ballasts most commonly used for the operation of T12 fluorescent bulbs. Starting July of 2012 most T12 fluorescent bulbs will be phased out of production.
T12 fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts where the most commonly used fluorescent lighting system dating back as far as the 1930’s. It is estimated that by 1951 more light was produced in the United States by fluorescent lamps than by incandescent lamps.
With the most recent T12 bulb phase-out, property owners of older buildings are retrofitting their buildings with the latest T5 & T8 lighting systems. The combination of energy savings, tax savings and rebates are in place to help minimize the burden to the property owners.
M&E can help property owners recover a portion of their investment with the Section 179D tax deduction. Depending on the extent of the retrofit, M&E can help recover a portion, or the maximum $0.60 per building square foot tax deduction.
